The Universitat Pompeu Fabra hited by cyber attack
According to a report dated June 14, 2023, Spain's Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) is currently on alert following a computer incident, which could be a cyber attack. The relevant authorities, the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Catalan Cybersecurity Agency, have launched a coordinated investigation since Tuesday morning.
In response to the incident, the university has put in place a plan of preventive measures to ensure the proper functioning of its IT infrastructure. According to Europa Press, the university has cut off its connectivity, meaning that it is not possible to access IT services. Despite this, teaching activities scheduled for this Tuesday are being maintained.
The UPF has issued a statement on its social networks, explaining that the measures adopted are intended to guarantee the smooth operation of its IT infrastructure. The university is requesting the collaboration of its entire academic community to reduce potential risks and ensure the normal conduct of university activities.
According to the published note, these measures have been put in place immediately to prevent more serious consequences in the future. The UPF asks for the understanding of all parties concerned and assures that it is implementing all available resources to resolve the situation as soon as possible, in collaboration with the Catalan Cybersecurity Agency.
The university undertakes to provide updates via social networks and its institutional website wherever possible.
The impact of this attack will have a significant impact on course sharing and the ability to share teaching on the university's internal network. Online exercise applications or stored data are no longer accessible, possibly preventing students from accessing their clouds. On the other hand, it would appear that face-to-face course operations have not been affected, enabling the university to continue its core operations.
