Cyber-attack on the Rheinische Post media group: websites cannot be reached
According to a report dated June 18, 2023, the in-house IT service provider of the German Rheinische Post media group was hit by a cyberattacks affecting media online portals that remained inaccessible from Friday. Since Monday 19, online editions are accessible to only a limited extent as the group still struggles with the consequences of the attack. Emergency editions of the newspapers from the group were printed and published on Monday. According to the company, no data has been stolen.
The impact of this cyberattack is significant has it prevented several media from publishing and providing information to the population. Even if emergency editions were published, the newspapers impacted apologized in front of their readers as these editions “does not fully correspond to what (they) are used to from (them)”. It highlights the capacity of disruption of cybercriminal groups as preventing media from providing information can have critical consequences in sensitive moments, such as elections or in case of natural disaster.
