Cyber attack by ransomware on the University of Salerno
According to a report dated 3 July 2023, the website of the Italian University of Salerno went down following a cyber attack by ransomware called Rhysidia.
The university's internal network appears to have been affected and, in addition to exam cancellations, disruptions to the university's systems have been reported. The e-learning portal (Moodle) was slow and often did not load pages correctly, although it sometimes recovered.
Meanwhile, the university's website was completely inaccessible, probably due to the ransomware attack and the high traffic the site has to handle on a daily basis. It has not been confirmed whether any data was stolen, including personal data.
Estimated impact
The impact of this attack is significant. In operational terms, a large proportion of the university's online courses and services are unavailable, making it impossible for students to take exams or carry out other key activities, which could delay certain parts of their studies.
