Ukrainian hackers claim to leak emails of Russian parliament deputy chief

In an update from August 22, 2023, it has come to light that a group of Ukrainian hackers going by the name "Cyber Resistance" have successfully breached the email account of Alexander Babakov. Babakov is a prominent Russian political figure closely associated with the Kremlin. The hackers claim to have exposed 11 gigabytes of emails, shedding light on documents that imply his participation in money laundering and efforts to evade imposed sanctions. Among the leaked Babakov correspondence are copies of his passport, financial records, and medical history.

Initially, the hackers shared these leaked emails with InformNapalm, an international collective composed of volunteers, including researchers and journalists. This group specializes in investigating data breaches and uncovering the involvement of the Russian government in various conflicts. Their investigation has brought to the surface that Babakov exploited his governmental connections for the purpose of money laundering, and he allegedly accepted bribes in connection with unlawful construction ventures. Furthermore, he bolstered his associations with African and Asian nations to sidestep Western sanctions. All the while, he maintained collaboration with a pro-Russian extremist party in Georgia.

This leak, which has been dubbed "BabakovLeaks," forms part of a sequence of inquiries pursued by InformNapalm, using materials furnished by hacktivists.
