Preventing phishing attempts to secure communications

Is it becoming more and more common for your employees to receive a fraudulent e-mails or messages on their phone? Phishing is a very real threat to businesses. This is why it is essential to set up a protocol to ensure secure communications within your organization. What is phishing? How to protect against it? Ercom, a subsidiary of Thalès Group and an expert in secure communications, explains.

What is phishing?

Phishing is a type of cyber attack by which criminals contact an individual by e-mail, telephone or SMS using a false identity to steal information (bank details, password, etc.). This threat affects individuals and organizations alike. Securing communications becomes therefore a priority, as organizations must protect their own data and that of their customers.

How to protect against phishing

The first step is to raise awareness among your staff, by teaching them the right thing to do: don't click on an unfamiliar web link, don't download a suspicious attachment, and so on. Your protocol should also include verification of a website's address in a browser. This is one of the ways to detect fraudulent websites. Be aware that sometimes only one character changes from the official address, so you need to be very careful. It is also imperative to share your password recommendations with them. These must be changed regularly, remain secret, include letters, numbers and special characters, and above all be different for each platform/software.

To ensure the security of your communications, we also recommend installing a 2-factor authentication system. This is key to avoiding phishing scams.

Finally, the use of a communications and data security tool is the only way to ensure 100% secure information exchanges.
